How does double glazing work?

Double glazing insulates against heat transfer between two different temperature zones by creating an air difference (inside and outside). In an IGU unit, two panes of glass are sealed together and divided by a spacer strip. The distance between the panes (usually 6-12mm) provides an air gap that delays thermal transfer (hot or cold) through conduction – it doesn't 'trap heat,' but it does delay heat movement to minimise heat loss. Since air cannot flow through the small gap between the panes, convection is delayed, reducing heat transfer. How does double glazing reduce heat loss? Through the use of the thermal cushion and insulation of the air stored in the enclosed unit, double glazing eliminates heat loss. When cold air strikes the exterior pane of glass, the temperature is transferred to the Argon gas layer. Argon gas has a 34% lower thermal transfer rate than air, which delays heat transfer between two different temperatures. As a result, the Argon layer transfers le...

Advantages and Disadvantages of Flat Roofs

Skilled Roofers recognizes that for the majority of homeowners, their house is their most valuable asset. It takes years of hard work and savings to be able to build or purchase your own home, which is why you can never take the structural integrity of your home for granted. Since your roof is one of the most important aspects of your house, it needs to be built properly.  If you've decided to build your own home, you'll most likely have to design your roof at some point. You'll need to decide whether you want a pitched roof (one with at least two slopes that rise at an angle greater than 10 degrees each to form a peak) or a flat roof at this stage (a roof with an angle of fewer than 10 degrees). Both roofing designs have advantages and disadvantages, but today we'll focus on our speciality: flat roofs. Advantages of Flat Roofs: The most obvious benefit of aluminium flat roofs is cost: materials are less expensive because they don't require as much "curb app...

Benefits of Tilt and Turn Windows

Image
Versatile Design & Flexible Ventilation: One of the biggest advantages of tilt and turn windows is that they offer a great deal of flexibility when it comes to ventilation. You don’t need to have the window fully open to let air into your home, you can simply open it slightly by tilting it. You can then adjust the angle depending on how much ventilation you want. The design also means that when it rains water is prevented from entering your home because of the tilted angle. High-Performance Energy Efficiency:  In general,  tilt & turn windows  are better at maintaining a pleasant indoor climate while keeping electric bills low than traditional, North American window styles. EuroLine Windows takes the high-performance aspect of tilt & turn windows one step further by offering the thermal performance needed for a Passive House design and, by creating windows that are rated at the highest StepCode possible according to the B.C Energy StepCode Council. Different Types of Windows

Image
All windows let in light, and most provide some ventilation, but windows can differ in several ways beyond those typical functions. It is easier to open certain window styles, some are good for large views, and some are better for airflow. Different windows may also have very different appearances to fit the architectural design or decorative style of a house. Narrowing down the several window choices begins with the identification of one of the basic types of windows.  Casement Windows - Casement windows (like wooden slat windows) often open out and normally pivot from side hinges. In order to provide sufficient light that is uninterrupted by muntin bars or other framings, most casements have fairly large glass panes. Casements often usually have a more transparent ventilation area than other styles of windows. Casement windows can make a very effective seal for enhanced energy efficiency when closed and locked. Like awning windows, casements do not open out into traffic lanes. ...
